ARE AYURVEDIC PREPARATIONS GOOD for babies ?

Age old traditions have been passed on for generations . The oil massage itself is
traditional . That being said keep in mind these pointers while choosing good quality
ones.

1. The Heavy Metal Risk

This is the most serious concern. Some traditional Ayurvedic formulations intentionally use processed metals like lead, mercury, or arsenic for their perceived therapeutic properties.

  • The Danger: Children are much more vulnerable to heavy metal poisoning because their brains and organs are still developing.
  • The Reality: While most topical lotions don't use these, "unapproved" or "unregulated" products manufactured without strict quality controls have been found by the FDA and Health Canada to contain toxic levels of lead and mercury.

2. Common Irritants & Allergens

Even "natural" ingredients can cause reactions on a child’s delicate skin:

  • Botanical Allergies: Essential oils or herbs like neem, sandalwood, or turmeric can trigger allergic contact dermatitis in some children.
  •  Potency: Herbal extracts can be very "hot" or powerful. For example, some traditional oils can cause stinging if they get near a child’s eyes or mouth.
  • Indigestion: Ayurveda often involves oil massage (Abhyanga). If the oil isn't washed off properly or is applied too close to feeding times, it can occasionally cause skin irritation or, if ingested, vomiting.

3. Hidden "Nasty" Ingredients

Just because a label says "Ayurvedic" doesn't mean it is 100% natural. Many commercial brands use a "natural" base but add synthetic chemicals to extend shelf life:

  • Parabens & Phthalates: Used as preservatives and scent-boosters, these are linked to hormone disruption.
  • Mineral Oil: A petroleum byproduct often used as a cheap base; it can clog pores and trap bacteria on a child's skin.
